Fujiya & Miyagi's sophomore album is a masterclass in subtle bait and switch. Despite their Japanese-sounding name, they're an English quartet, not a duo. They aren’t a true krautrock band but deliver danceable pop music with a deadpan expression. Like a mischievous version of Hot Chip, they blend stoic musical styles with a poker-faced delivery. "Lightbulbs" continues the trend of their debut, "Transparent Things," maintaining an unflappable demeanor and avoiding clichéd rhythms. With a constant tongue-in-cheek approach reminiscent of Andy Kaufman's humor, the album is subtly funny without ever breaking character.
