Once upon a time, Khazad-dûm was the swankiest Dwarf Kingdom this side of the Misty Mountains. It was a colossal maze of halls and passages, filled with the clanging of hammers and the chattering of Durin’s folk, the Longbeards. These industrious little fellas mined Mithril, the Middle-earth equivalent of hitting the lottery every day, and dug deeper and deeper into the mountain.
In the good ol' days, the western entrance of Khazad-dûm was wide open, welcoming trade with their pointy-eared neighbors, the Elves. The doors themselves were a magical collaboration of Dwarven craftsmanship and Elven enchantment, adorned with Mithril and ithildin inscriptions that glowed under the moon and stars. The cherry on top? A riddle: ‘Speak friend and enter.’ Talk about a security system with style!
Life was a long, peaceful party for the Dwarves until disaster struck. War and death came knocking, and the once-bustling doors of Khazad-dûm were slammed shut. By the twilight years of the Third Age, no Dwarf with a smidgen of sense would set foot in what had become known as Moria, the Black Pit. It was now an orc-infested hellhole, with even nastier creatures lurking in its depths.
So, when the Fellowship of the Ring rocked up to the cliffs of Celebdil, they found the legendary Doors of Durin sealed tight, surrounded by a landscape straight out of a horror story. The once-majestic holly trees were now ghostly pale, their roots submerged in a murky, black pool. Unseen eyes watched from the depths as our heroes pondered how to get inside.
