Brand: Music

Having taken Brazil by storm, Emicida is fast on his way to becoming a world music star. In the five years since he recorded his first hip-hop mixtapes in a makeshift studio in a favela on the outskirts of São Paulo, he has headlined sold-out concerts and made nationwide TV appearances, toured Europe and performed in the U.S. For his new album (his second) he spent three weeks in Africa, writing songs and playing with local musicians. In Angola he recorded with percussionist João Morgado, a champion of the Angolan dance music semba (an antecedent of Brazilian samba), and in Cape Verde he collaborated with Cesária Evora's guitarist, Kaku Alves. Back in Brazil samba star Vanessa da Mata and the great Caetano Veloso eagerly accepted his invitation to sing with him. The album's title refers to Emicida's strongest memories of his African sojourn: 'Smiling children, hip dancing, nightmares around them trying to steal their happiness, and in the midst of all that their obligations, doing their homework...'
